When you wake up in the morning, do you experience pain in your jaw joint? Do you have difficulty opening or closing your mouth? Do you have sensitivity in your teeth or do they look shorter? Do you get routine headaches? These could be clear signs of grinding or bruxing. If uncontrolled, this can lead to damage in your jaw joint, your teeth or any dental work that you have. Grinding habits often lead to excessive wear and flattening of teeth, cracked teeth or fillings, and receding gums.
If you grind your teeth during the day or at night, we will recommend a night guard to protect your teeth from these grinding forces. Night guards are a custom fit, acrylic cover that fits snug on your upper teeth and will protect your teeth from the forces of grinding, thus preserving your teeth from continued wear. It some cases they can help discourage grinding activity while sleeping, and can help some people who suffer from TMJ discomfort.
Custom Night Guard Treatment
Two appointments are required to get fitted for a custom night guard. During your first visit an impression of your teeth will be made. The impressions will be sent to our lab who will make a customize night guard that fits your teeth and bite.
On your second visit we will show you how to place it into your mouth and will adjust it to your bite. There are different kinds of night guards from soft materials to harder plastic materials. We will recommend the material best suited for you.
